The protestors’ spirit was unabated in the face of police brutality and employee victimization of protesting workers.
A conference was scheduled by labour anarchists for May 4, 1886, in Haymarket Square to denounce anti-worker acts.
As a result of a bomb going off among the police,
which prompted them to shoot in reaction, the previously calm assembly turned violent.
A symbol of the global fight for workers’ rights, the violent altercation between the police.
And the workers gained international attention.
In honour of the Haymarket Square incident,
The International Socialist Conference designated
May 1 to be a global day of labour, or May Day, in 1889.
The Hours of Work (Industry) Convention, adopted by the International Labour Organisation in 1919,
Established a cap on the number of hours that might be worked each day
and each week at eight per day and 48 per week.
On July 14, 1921, British India accepted the Convention.
The working class launched similar agitations in the following
decades in numerous nations to win the right to an eight-hour workday.
